Currency was a humongous problem in the colonies. The colonists could not settle on a certain currency. Here are some currencies they tried using:
Commodity money: Commodities such as wampum and beaver furs were bartered. However, the values of items changed over time.
Pounds, shillings, and pence: Like in England, colonies created their own coins. However, a New Hampshire pound isn't worth the same as a New Jersey pound.
Bills of credit: Bills of credit were paper bills that could later be exchanged for a fixed amount of gold and silver.
Foreign coins: Foreign coins were attempted to be used in the colonies. However, like the pounds, shillings, and pence, the coins had different values in different colonies.
Continental currency: The Continental Congress issued these bills to pay for the American Revolution. These bills lost popularity with bills of credit.
The colonies did not have a proper currency system until after the Revolutionary War.
