Levels of Government
In the New England Region, there were many levels of Government . . .
- At the lowest level there was the town government that locally maintained themselves and kept their independence from the Colonial Government which was at a higher level with more power. The Town Government tended to be very closely tied to the Puritan Church Leadership which then at the time was very important as for you had to go to church everyday of would get harsh punishments.
- At the next level was the Colonial Government. For the most part governments tended to be partly elected and partly appointed. For the part that got elected, it was obviously the democracy that chose their leaders. Though for the part of the government that got appointed, it was the governor that got chosen by the British Government.
